The blanket scarf is a warm accessory that can add texture, color, and pattern to your outfits. It is also very versatile, as there are many ways to style and tie a blanket scarf.
Tips for Wearing a Blanket Scarf
- When styling a bold accessory such as a blanket scarf, keep your earrings small. Studs or small drop earrings that won’t catch in your scarf work well.
- If you have long hair, I recommend putting it up into a bun or a ponytail when wearing this type of scarf. It keeps your hair from catching on the scarf and helps accentuate your scarf.
- If you get a blanket scarf and it feels too bulky, you can actually cut it in half.
Cutting a Blanket Scarf
At a height of 5’3″ I find blanket scarves to be overwhelming for me. I recently cut one in half to scale it down and really like the results.
Steps:
First, lay the scarf out on a flat surface.
Next, cut across diagonally to make two triangles. I recommend using sharp craft scissors or fabric scissors. (My cut looks a little wonky because when cutting corner to corner I had to cross over the straight line in the pattern. It’s not noticeable, however, when styling the scarf.)
Gently fray the freshly cut sides if you wish. (Left half shown below has been gently pulled apart along the edge.)
Finally, enjoy your smaller scarf! (You can keep the other half as a back up or share with a friend.) Below is a photo of me styling the scarf after cutting it. I love being able to get the cozy look of a blanket scarf without so much bulk!

Methods for Tying a Blanket Scarf
There are multiple methods for styling/tying a blanket scarf, including the handkerchief (shown above), braided, infinity, front + back tuck, and halfway loop styles. Blanket scarves can also be styled as belted shawls and flyaway vests. This easy to follow video by EP Style shows several ways to style a blanket scarf. What a great idea! I never though to cut the scarf to make it more size appropriate. I’m also 5.3″ and tend not to wear my blanket scarves because they are so big! Great post.
