Today I am sharing tips on how to select the best swimsuit for your body shape. I have also included tips specific to bust size. If you are unsure of your body shape, check out my Body Shape Analysis service.
For this post, I am providing fit tips for hourglass, rectangle, triangle, oval, and inverted triangle body shapes.
Styling Tips According to Body Shape
Hourglass
Ruching and details around the middle help highlight a small waist. A deep v-neck can help accentuate your bust. Classic one-piece suits look great on this body shape!
Rectangle
Suits with cut-outs or faux wrap styles can help add visual dimension and curves. High cut leg openings also help create a more curvy look.
Triangle
Select suits with bold patterns, colors, or embellishments on top to draw the eye upward. Swimsuits with thick straps and dark-colored bottoms are also complimentary to this body shape.
Oval
Suits with ruching or an empire waist can help camouflage a thicker waistline.
Inverted Triangle
Suits with ruffles, skirts, or embellishments on the bottom half work well to visually balance this body shape.
Here are additional tips specific to bust size:
Small Bust
Select suits with padding, boning, ruffles, or busy patterns on top to accentuate and highlight the bust area.
Large Bust
Select suits with underwires, molded cups, and adjustable straps. I actually purchase bra-sized swim tops for my size 36G bust because my top no longer fits in standard suits after having three kids.
Money Saving Tip:
Since bra-sized tops can be pricey, buy one with navy or black in the pattern and then find solid-colored bottoms from a more affordable brand. Below is a swimsuit I have worn. My bikini top is from Fantasie, but is no longer available. I was able to find inexpensive bottoms and a cute rash guard to match. Good brands for bra-sized tops are Panache, Freya, Fantasie, and Lands’ End. I have purchased both Fantasie and Freya brand tops through Amazon at discounted prices, so I recommend checking there first. These brands (with the exception of Lands’ End) are also sold online through the retailers Bare Necessities and Her Room.

This post was so helpful. I HATE looking for bathing suits. It’s SO hard to find one I’m confortable in after turning 40! I prefer full coverage for my bottoms. xx-S
